Biological reactive intermediates are chemicals that initiate non-enzymatic reactions with cellular macromolecules following enzymatic reactions that will occur in vitro under specific conditions. The BRI symposia series began 35 years ago, and has been held every five years in the following locations:
* University of Turku, Finland (1975)
* University of Surrey, Guildford, The United Kingdom (1980)
* University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland, USA (1985)
* University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona, USA (1990)
* GSF Forschungszentrum and Technical University of Munich, Germany (1995)
* Université René Descartes, Paris, France (2000)

BRI is being organized on July 2010 (July 15th – 18th) by the IMIM – Hospital del Mar and hosted by the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB), Spain. The BRIVIII Symposium goes before the XII International Conference of Toxicology (IUTOX 2010), also being hosted in Barcelona the following week (July 19th – 23rd). The science is at the cutting edge of mechanistic toxicology, with presentations coupling fundamental chemistry to the fields of genomics and proteomics, to human exposures and risk assessment. This integration of data on biological reactive intermediates from across disciplines (chemistry, analytical chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacology, toxicology, epidemiology, etc) highlights the unique characteristics and relevance of the symposium.
Looking forward to seeing you next July in Barcelona, I thank you in advance for helping towards the success of BRIVIII.
